REAL MADRID’S shock loss to La Liga newbies Girona shocked the world and no doubt delighted their fierce rivals Barcelona.
It now sets Los Blancos eight points behind Barca- we take a look at the facts and stats that were generated following Girona’s historic victory over the reigning European, and domestic, champions.

Cristiano Ronaldo
The man that was voted world footballer of the year, hasn’t proved his worth this season.
Of all goalscorers in Europe’s top five leagues this season, he has the worst conversion rate.
This works out as one goal for every forty shots.
He was subjected to ‘Messi’ chants during Real Madrid’s loss to Girona.

First date nerves
Girona’s triumph over the defending European champions was their first ever competitive meeting.

Track Record
Real Madrid may have dominated European football for the last few years, but if their history is anything to go by then finishing top of the Spanish league isn’t looking good for them.
The reigning La Liga champions have never won the league after being eight, or more, points below the top in any season.

Breaking a 90’s record
Girona’s feat as newcomers beating the men in white is something that has not been seen since 1990.
The last time a La Liga rookie beat Real Madrid was when Real Burgos beat them on October 28- 27 years ago.
Catalan uprising
The upset was the first time a Catalan side, other than Barcelona, had beaten Madrid in La Liga for more than 10 years.
Espanyol were the last team to get the better of them way back in October 2007, when Barcelona’s Ernesto Valverde was at the helm.
JUAN MEDINA Ramos reacts to Girona’s form- he is the only active member of Real Madrid that suffered a similar defeat against the only other Catalan team to beat them (excluding Barca)[/caption]
Sergio Ramos, still active at the club, was part of the team that lost to Espanyol- today will be a particularly bitter pill for him to swallow.
There were many Catalan flags being waved around in the Girona end as the tensions in Spain rumble on.
